Resolution recognizing the 30th anniversary of Title IX and celebrating girls and women in sports.

Whereas, In1972, Title IX, which prohibited sexual discrimination in any educational or athletic program receiving federal funding, was signed into law; and
Whereas, Once Title IX began providing young women and girls with the same opportunities afforded their male counterparts, they began participating in athletics in unprecedented numbers; and
Whereas, This participation provides young women and girls with multiple physiological, psychological and sociological benefits; and
Whereas, According to a Report by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, girls who participate in sports fair better academically and have lower drop-out rates than girls who do not participate in sports; and
Whereas, Research studies commissioned by the Women's Sports Foundation concluded that girls involved in sports not only benefit from better health, but are also less likely to engage in risky health behaviors such as smoking, drinking, or using drugs; and
Whereas, Title IX has produced thousands of healthy and strong young women whose achievements we celebrate; and
Whereas, The passage of Title IX was an important milestone in the lives of girls and women in this country; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York recognizes the 30th anniversary of Title IX and celebrates girls and women in sports.
