Res. No. 70 Title Resolution calling upon the State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to approve, Assembly Bill 9203-B relating to the creation of a brownfields site assessment, acquisition, and remediation assistance program. Body By Council Members Reyna, The Speaker (Council Member Miller), Gennaro, Barron, Comrie, DeBlasio, Dilan, Fidler, Martinez, Nelson, Perkins, Vann, Yassky and Liu; also Council Members Quinn, Stewart and Clarke Whereas, Brownfields are sites that were at one time industrially developed, but now are left vacant and mildly environmentally polluted; and Whereas, A number of brownfields are situated throughout the State and City; and Whereas, Assembly Bill 9203-B will amend the State Urban Development Corporation Act to provide special assistance and funds that will support the environmental remediation and redevelopment of these brownfields; and Whereas, The Assembly Bill is particularly important to the City which has such a shortage of land, and would therefore benefit from the redevelopment of areas that have lied idle for many years; and Whereas, The Assembly Bill would permit the development of much needed affordable housing, community facilities, and open space for the City's residents and families; Whereas, This particular bill has struck a fine balance between ensuring environmental safety and cost effective savings so that the remediated sites will be financially feasible for community-oriented development such as affordable housing, community facilities, and open space; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Council calls upon the State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to approve, Assembly Bill 9203-B relating to the creation of a brownfields site assessment, acquisition, and remediation assistance program.
