Resolution calling upon the State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to approve, Assembly Bill 9203-B relating to the creation of a brownfields site assessment, acquisition, and remediation assistance program.

Whereas, Brownfields are sites that were at one time industrially developed, but now are left vacant and mildly environmentally polluted; and
Whereas, A number of brownfields are situated throughout the State and City; and
Whereas, Assembly Bill 9203-B will amend the State Urban Development Corporation Act to provide special assistance and funds that will support the environmental remediation and redevelopment of these brownfields; and
Whereas, The Assembly Bill is particularly important to the City which has such a shortage of land, and would therefore benefit from the redevelopment of areas that have lied idle for many years; and
Whereas, The Assembly Bill would permit the development of much needed affordable housing, community facilities, and open space for the City's residents and families;
Whereas, This particular bill has struck a fine balance between ensuring environmental safety and cost effective savings so that the remediated sites will be financially feasible for community-oriented development such as affordable housing, community facilities, and open space; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Council calls upon the State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to approve, Assembly Bill 9203-B relating to the creation of a brownfields site assessment, acquisition, and remediation assistance program.
