Res. No. 1073

Resolution expressing the condolences and unconditional support of the people of New York City for every citizen of our sister City of London during this period of mourning and throughout our common struggle to preserve democracy and freedom.

By The Speaker (Council Member Miller) and Council Members Nelson, Gentile, Addabbo Jr., Avella, Clarke, Comrie, Fidler, Gerson, Gonzalez, Koppell, Liu, McMahon, Palma, Recchia Jr., Sanders Jr., Sears, Vallone Jr. and Weprin

Whereas, On July 7, 2005, terrorists attacked the people of London with a series of bombings that targeted subway and bus riders during the morning rush hour; and

Whereas, These attacks were intended to strike indiscriminately at men, women and children, killing at least 50 innocent civilians and wounding another 700; and

Whereas, London’s Mayor, Ken Livingstone, aptly described the bombings in London as an attack aimed not at “presidents or prime ministers,” but at “ordinary, working-class Londoners, black and white, Muslim and Christian, Hindu and Jew, young and old,” and stated that such attacks were “an indiscriminate attempt to slaughter, irrespective of any considerations for age, for class, for religion or whatever;” and

Whereas, The people of London have historically faced challenges with courage, stoicism and honor, for which they are justly renown throughout the world; and

Whereas, The people of New York City recall the solidarity and support that Londoners extended to us after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center, and New Yorkers wish to return the same solidarity and support for Londoners during this difficult time; and

Whereas, New Yorkers share a special kinship with Londoners because we both live in cities with diverse populations and unwavering dedication to the values of tolerance and pluralism that form the basis of free societies; and

Whereas, Both New Yorkers and Londoners are determined to preserve the spirit of liberty against any aggressor that seeks to destroy freedom; now therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York expresses the condolences and unconditional support of the people of New York City for every citizen of our sister City of London during this period of mourning and throughout our common struggle to preserve democracy and freedom.
