Resolution calling upon the appropriate committee of the Council to hold hearings on the safety of elevators, and especially, the sudden and unexpected opening of elevator doors that resulted in the tragic death of the youth, Dimal Suero, on June 25, 2002 at 10 Richmond Plaza in the Bronx and severe injuries to the youth, Jason Ford, on October 22, 2002 at Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx.

Whereas, Dimal Suero, age 12, tragically died on June 25, 2002 at 10 Richmond Plaza in the Bronx, after the elevator door on the 25th floor opened which resulted in his falling down the elevator shaft and his subsequent death; and
Whereas, Jason Ford, age 17, was severely injured on October 22, 2002 at Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx, when the elevator door on the 3rd floor opened after the youth was allegedly pushed against the door, which resulted in his falling down the elevator shaft and sustaining severe injuries; and
Whereas, It is the responsibility of several City agencies to investigate these tragedies, such as the Elevator Division within the Department of Buildings, the Emergency Medical Service Command of the Fire Department, and the Police Department; and
Whereas, It is the responsibility of the City Council to conduct oversight hearings on such tragic incidents and to take action to prevent future occurrences; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon the appropriate committee of the Council to hold hearings on the safety of elevators, and especially, the sudden and unexpected opening of elevator doors that resulted in the tragic death of the youth, Dimal Suero, on June 25, 2002 at 10 Richmond Plaza in the Bronx and severe injuries to the youth, Jason Ford, on October 22, 2002 at Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx.
