Proposed Res. No. 745-A Title Resolution calling upon the Augusta National Golf Club to cease its practice of gender segregation and urging all television networks and other media, particularly CBS Broadcasting, to refrain from broadcasting the Masters in 2004 and future years as long as it is held at Augusta or any other venue that promotes segregation and discrimination. Body By Council Members Brewer, Koppell, Quinn, Clarke, DeBlasio, Monserrate, Gonzalez, Sanders, Jr., Avella, Baez, Barron, Boyland, Comrie, Davis, Fidler, Foster, Gerson, Jackson, Martinez, Recchia, Jr., Reed, Reyna, Seabrook, Serrano, Stewart, Vann, Weprin, Yassky, Moskowitz and The Public Advocate (Ms. Gotbaum) Whereas, The people of the City of New York believe in equal opportunity for all; and Whereas, The highest ideals of sports include the principles of fair play and equal opportunity; and Whereas, The City of New York provides athletic facilities, including tennis courts, swimming pools, running tracks, and golf courses, that are open to everyone regardless of gender; and Whereas, Over 30 years have passed since the enactment of Title IX, reflecting our nation's commitment to equal opportunity in sports; and Whereas, The City of New York is the home of our country's major broadcasters, who are licensed by the federal government to operate their networks and stations and have responsibilities to the public; and Whereas, The Augusta National Golf Club, site of the Masters golf tournament, is segregated by gender, and is a national symbol of discrimination against women; and Whereas, Hosting a major tournament in a sport with a broad national and global following at a venue that discriminates against women sends a message that equal opportunity is a value of secondary concern, and broadcasting the Masters from Augusta reinforces and disseminates this message; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon the Augusta National Golf Club to cease its practices of gender segregation and urges all television networks and other media, particularly CBS Broadcasting, to refrain from broadcasting the Masters in 2004 and future years as long as it is held at Augusta or any other venue that promotes segregation and discrimination. |1013|
