Res. No. 90 Title Resolution condemning AT&T for its decision to relocate 80 jobs from Lower Manhattan to White Plains and urging AT&T to reconsider any plans to move additional jobs out of Lower Manhattan, as other corporations have shown a commitment to keep jobs in New York City in the wake of September 11th. Body By the Speaker (Council Member Miller) and Council Members Quinn, Sanders Jr., Oddo, McMahon, Avella, Baez, Barron, Comrie, DeBlasio, Jackson, Jennings, Katz, Koppell, Lopez, Martinez, Monserrate, Nelson, Recchia Jr., Reyna, Rivera, Weprin, Brewer and Gallagher; also Council Members Addabbo, Gennaro, Seabrook, Stewart and Gerson Whereas, In a trend that was accelerated by the World Trade Center attacks; many corporations in Lower Manhattan have relocated to areas outside New York City; and Whereas, Corporations, such as American Express, have reversed their original decision to leave Lower Manhattan; and Whereas, American Express is bringing back 3,500 employees to the World Financial Center, including about 560 technology and finance workers who have been in Jersey City since 1999; and Whereas, The Communications Workers of America ("CWA") has reported that AT&T presently employs approximately 700 individuals in New York City; and Whereas, AT&T's decision to move 80 jobs from its offices at 33 Thomas Street in Lower Manhattan to White Plains comes at a time when Lower Manhattan is struggling to recover from the terrorist attacks of September 11th; and Whereas, AT&T also has a local services office in Staten Island with several hundred employees that is being shut down and whose employees will be dispersed to New Jersey, Florida and California; and Whereas, The continued loss of jobs in Lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City will hurt the local economy as those workers utilize local support businesses, such as retail establishments and restaurants; and Whereas, AT&T greatly profits from its New York City customers, AT&T needs to show good faith by not leaving a City that is in economic recovery; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York condemns AT&T for its decision to relocate 80 jobs from Lower Manhattan to White Plains and urges AT&T to reconsider any plans to move additional jobs out of Lower Manhattan, as other corporations have shown a commitment to keep jobs in New York City in the wake of September 11th. |1013| |1013|
