Summary: This bill would require all taxis and for-hire vehicles to prominently display a sign on all rear passenger doors warning passengers to look for cyclists before opening the door. The signs would be provided to drivers and vehicle owners at no cost by the taxi and limousine commission.

A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring taxis and for-hire vehicles to display a decal warning passengers to look for cyclists when opening the door

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

Section 1. Chapter 5 of title 19 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 19-557 to read as follows:

§ 19-557 Cyclist awareness decal. a. For purposes of this section, the term “cyclist awareness decal” means a sign that warns passengers to look for cyclists before opening the door.

b. Every owner of a taxicab or for-hire vehicle shall prominently display cyclist awareness decals on the inside of the rear passenger doors.

c. Such cyclist awareness decals shall be provided by the commission at no cost to the driver or owner of the vehicle.

d. The commission shall promulgate rules establishing the penalty for violation of subdivision b of this section.

§ 2. This local law takes effect 120 days after it becomes law.
