Resolution in support of "Bring Your Children to Work Day" to be held on April 25, 2002.

Whereas, According to the article entitled About Take Our Daughters to Work (the "Take Our Daughters to Work article") issued by the Ms. Foundation for Woman (the "Ms. Foundation"), in the early 1990's the Ms. Foundation conducted extensive research which indicated that adult women felt strongly that they wanted to change the working environment their daughters were experiencing; and
Whereas, The Take our Daughters to Work article states that research aimed at establishing Take our Daughters to Work Day demonstrated that this event would call adults' attention to the vocational transition girls experience- and what they can do about such transition; and
Whereas, Take Our Daughters to Work Day was established in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation; and
Whereas, Since 1993, Take our Daughters to Work Day has been held every fourth Thursday in April; and
Whereas, Through Take our Daughters to Work Day, many young girls have expanded their knowledge of employment opportunities and now plan on pursuing non-traditional careers; and
Whereas, Girls who participated in Take our Daughters to Work Day have reported that the day's activities have given them an increased sense of self-confidence; and
Whereas, According to the article entitled, Taking our Daughters to Work Day Encourages Equality at Work, research growing out of the Take our Daughters to Work Day has also found that Americans believe we need to become more accepting of boys who express an interest in non-traditional careers; and
Whereas, Including boys into this event will have the effect of exposing them to the total spectrum of workplace opportunities, including those opportunities now considered "non-traditional" for boys; and
Whereas, As a result of the above-mentioned research and in the spirit of expanding employment opportunities to all genders, the Mayor and City Council will expand the 2002 event to include all children male and female; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York supports "Bring Your Children to Work Day" to be held on April 25, 2002.
