Summary: This bill would prohibit the Taxi and Limousine Commission from requiring the vehicles it licenses to have personal injury protection (also known as no-fault) liability coverage in an amount greater than 200 percent of the amount required by state law.

A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to limiting the amount of personal injury insurance coverage that the taxi and limousine commission may require for licensed vehicles

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

 

Section 1. Chapter 5 of title 19 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 19-557 to read as follows:

§ 19-557 Personal injury insurance coverage for licensed vehicles. The commission shall not require an owner of a licensed vehicle to maintain personal injury insurance coverage for the expenses specified in paragraphs (1), (2), and (3) of subdivision (a) of section 5102 of the insurance law in an amount that exceeds 200 percent of the amount of personal injury insurance coverage for such expenses required by state law. This section does not prohibit any person from voluntarily purchasing personal injury insurance coverage for a licensed vehicle in excess of such amount.

§ 2. This local law takes effect March 1, 2026.
