Resolution calling upon the New York City Department of Education to include instruction in environmental science at all appropriate grade levels of the New York City public school system.

Whereas, Approximately 1.1 million schoolchildren attend public school within the City of New York; and

Whereas, These schoolchildren are required by State law to receive instruction in science throughout their education, including two credits of science in grades seven and eight, and two credits of science during their high school years; and

Whereas, Furthermore, all such schoolchildren must pass a Regents examination in science in order to graduate with a high school diploma; and

Whereas, “Environmental science” - meaning the branch of biology concerned with the relations between organisms and their environment - has become increasingly important to society as the human population and its demands on the Earth’s resources have grown, and continue to grow; and

Whereas, In order for New York City schoolchildren to develop into productive citizens, they must develop an understanding of the principles of environmental science, so that they can incorporate those principles into their adult lives; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the City Council calls upon the New York City Department of Education to include instruction in environmental science at all appropriate grade levels of the New York City public school system.
