Whereas, On September 11, 2001, terrorists coordinated a series of horrific attacks against the United States, killing nearly 3,000 people; and

Whereas, The terrorist attacks of September 11 shocked the world and caused grieving Americans throughout the nation to unite in a spirit of pride, courage and national service; and

Whereas, Immediately after the attacks of September 11, many brave men and women from throughout the country and from all walks of life came together like never before to heroically and, in many cases, voluntarily participate in the search, rescue and recovery efforts in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania; and

Whereas, In an effort to pay tribute to the lives lost on September 11, as well as those who participated in the search, rescue and recovery efforts, U.S. Representative Peter King recently sponsored H. Con. Res. 473, which would urge the President to designate September 11 as a national day of voluntary service, charity and compassion; and

Whereas, H. Con. Res. 473 would recognize that the date of September 11 “will never and should never be just another day in the hearts and minds of all Americans;” and

Whereas, H. Con. Res. 473 states that it is “fitting and essential to establish a lasting, meaningful, and positive legacy of service for future generations as a tribute to those heroes of September 11;” and

Whereas, H. Con. Res. 473 also acknowledges that “many citizens wish to memorialize September 11 by engaging in personal and individual acts of community service or giving activities as part of a national day of recognition and tribute; and

Whereas, According to One Day’s Pay, an organization working to establish September 11 as a national day of voluntary service, charity and compassion, nearly one million people volunteered their services on September 11, 2003 in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, as well as those who participated in the search, rescue and recovery efforts; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York support of H. Con. Res. 473, sponsored by U.S. Representative Peter King, which calls upon President George W. Bush to designate September 11 as an annually recognized day of voluntary service, charity and compassion
