Res. No. 971 Title Resolution calling upon Governor George Pataki and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to recognize and honor the valiant and selfless efforts of the uniformed rescue workers who fell on September 11, 2001, by listing them together, in the context within which they gave their lives, by department, including rank, badge number, and unit. Body By Council Members Koppell, Avella, Clarke, Comrie, Espada, Foster, Seabrook and Weprin Whereas, The events of September 11, 2001, tragically resulted in the loss of 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of New York, 37 police officers from the Port Authority Police Department, 23 police officers from the New York City Police Department, and other uniformed rescue workers; and Whereas, These courageous men and women rescued thousands from the World Trade Center, demonstrating to the entire world the true meaning of courage and sacrifice; and Whereas, The World Trade Center memorial will honor the countless acts of unknown heroism carried out that day both by civilians and by uniformed rescue workers who responded to the tragic events that day; and Whereas, There is no hierarchy in the depth of loss felt by those left behind by the victims of this senseless tragedy, as all those lost lives were precious and their loss will be equally mourned; and Whereas, Acknowledging uniformed rescue workers in the World Trade Center memorial would not diminish the loss of the thousands of civilians who died that day; and Whereas, History demands that we, as elected officials and representatives of the citizens of New York City, not forget any of the victims of this tragedy and should ensure that the World Trade Center memorial recognizes all victims of this horrible event in an appropriate and accurate manner, including recognition of those uniformed rescue workers who risked and ultimately gave their lives in service to the City of New York; and Whereas, Specific recognition of the uniformed rescue workers who died on September 11, 2001 would honor their memory and sacrifice; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon Governor George Pataki and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to recognize and honor the valiant and selfless efforts of the uniformed rescue workers who fell on September 11, 2001, by listing them together, in the context within which they gave their lives, by department, including rank, badge number, and unit.
