Title
A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to the planting of drought-resistant trees and vegetation on city-owned property.
Body
Be it enacted by the Council as follows:
Section 1. Title 24 of the administrative code of the city of New York is hereby amended by adding a new section 24-340 to read as follows:
? 24-340 Planting of drought-resistant trees and vegetation on city-owned property. a. For purposes of this section only, the following terms shall have the following meanings:
(1) "Drought-resistant" means having low water requirements.
(2) "Trees" means all forms of plants having permanent woody self-supporting
trunks.
(3) "Turf" means a surface layer of soil containing a dense growth of grass and its matted roots.
(4) "Vegetation" means plants collectively of whatever name or nature not included
under the term "trees".
b. In any landscaping project conducted on city-owned property for which the
use of turf is not necessary for functional or recreational purposes, drought-resistant trees and vegetation shall be planted.
c. When renovating existing turf or installing new turf on city-owned property, varieties
of turf with reduced water needs shall be selected.
? 2. This local law shall take effect sixty days after its enactment.
