Resolution recognizing Tuesday, April 16th as Equal Pay Day for Women, as established by the National Committee on Pay Equity.

By Council Member Perkins, Boyland, Gerson, Gennaro, Moskowitz, Nelson, Quinn, Reyna and Serrano; also Council Members Rivera, Koppell, Vann and Sanders
Whereas, The many contributions by women to our communities, this nation and throughout the world, should be recognized and honored; and
Whereas, The work that women perform and their contributions to society are often under appreciated, and the celebration of Women's History Month in March is a welcome reminder of their significant accomplishments; and
Whereas, On April 16th, as we celebrate Equal Pay Day for Women, we are again reminded that women are significantly undervalued; and
Whereas, According to the National Committee on Pay Equity, a woman must work until Tuesday of the following week in order to earn the wages paid to a man for the work he performed in the previous week; and
Whereas, The disparity between the wages earned by men and women is primarily the result of discrimination and the concentration of women in traditionally undervalued jobs; and
Whereas, The disparity in wages earned invariably has an adverse effect on the children in our society; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York recognizes Tuesday, April 16th as Equal Pay Day for Women, as established by the National Committee on Pay Equity.
