Res. No. 2122 Title Resolution supporting House Concurrent Resolution 249 calling upon the 107th Congress to hold a joint session in New York City in the wake of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center. Body By Council Members Provenzano, Freed, Henry, Marshall, Michels, Miller and Clarke; also Council Members Carrion, O'Donovan, Povman, Robinson, Sabini and Abel Whereas, On September 11, 2001 the United States suffered the worst terrorist attack on its soil in American history when two hijacked commercial airplanes were deliberately flown into each of the twin towers of New York City's World Trade Center, and a third plane was flown into the Pentagon in Washington; and Whereas, The attack on the World Trade Center killed thousands of people, displaced thousands from their homes, tens of thousands from their jobs and caused billions of dollars in damage; and Whereas, This attack against the United States targeted the World Trade Center precisely because it symbolized the freedom, diversity and prosperity of the United States and of the City in which it was located, which is the economic capital of the United States and the world; and Whereas, In 1789 the first meeting of the United States Congress was held in New York City, just a short distance from the site of the World Trade Center; and Whereas, Congressman Charles Rangel, the "Dean" of the New York City Congressional Delegation, has introduced House Concurrent Resolution 249, to provide for a joint session of Congress to be held in New York City at such date, time and location as the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate may consider appropriate; and Whereas, So that people all over the world may continue to look to New York as a model of a free, open, prosperous and secure City, New York must now look to our federal government and fellow Americans for their full support during these difficult times, and the convening of a special one day joint session of Congress in lower Manhattan would be appropriate to express and underscored this support and solidarity; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York supports House Concurrent Resolution 249 calling upon the 107th Congress to hold a joint session in New York City in the wake of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center.
