Res. No. 1288 Title Resolution in support of the Million Mom March on Mothers' Day 2000 in Washington, D.C. and calling on Congress to pass sensible gun legislation to protect our communities. Body By Council Members Fisher, Clarke, Freed, Henry, Lopez, Michels and Stabile; also Council Member DiBrienza, Eisland, Foster, Harrison, Koslowitz, Leffler, Linares, Marshall, Miller, Perkins, Porvenzano, Rivera, Robinson, Rodriguez, Warden, Wooten and Golden. Whereas, In the past year, we have seen unprecedented shootings in schools, churches and workplaces and every year in the United States, approximately 5,000 children die from gunfire; and Whereas, Every day a dozen children die from gun-shot wounds and each day that there is no action on this issue we lose twelve more children, yet Congress has failed to pass laws to keep our children safe from guns; and Whereas, the Million Mom March is a movement of mothers from all over the country, many of whom have lost children, husbands, siblings and friends to gun violence and others who want to prevent tragedy from occurring, have joined together to demand sensible gun laws that protect our children; and Whereas, On May 14, 2000, mothers, fathers, honorary parents, grandparents, teachers, community leaders and children will attend events in Washington, D.C. and in dozens of communities across the nation to send a strong message to Congress that they must take responsible action this session by passing sensible gun laws; and Whereas, The goal of the Million Mom March is to enact reasonable, common sense, enforceable laws that would require licensing and registration, cooling off periods, background checks, safety training, child-proofing, and stricter enforcement while recognizing that guns may be necessary for hunting, law enforcement and national security; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York supports the Million Mom March on Mothers' Day 2000 in Washington, D.C. and calls on Congress to pass sensible gun legislation to protect our communities.
