Summary: This bill would require the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation (Parks) to post informational signs about rip tides at each beach entrance, lifeguard chair, and jetty under the jurisdiction of Parks. The Commissioner would be required to post the signs in English, Spanish, and at least two other languages to be determined by Parks.

A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to rip current signs at beaches under the jurisdiction of the department of parks and recreation

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

 

Section 1. Section 18-131 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new subdivision e to read as follows:

e. 1. The commissioner shall post signs that display safety information about rip currents at all bathing beaches under the jurisdiction of the department. Such signs shall include both words and visual imagery indicating the danger posed by rip currents and what to do if caught in a rip current.

2. The commissioner shall make such signs available in English, Spanish, and at least 2 other languages to be determined by the commissioner, and shall post such signs in such languages at each bathing beach entrance, at each lifeguard chair, and, where practicable, at each jetty abutting a bathing beach.

§ 2. This local law takes effect 60 days after it becomes law.
