Resolution calling upon New York retailers, clothing brand manufacturers and designers to commit to production in New York City factories that abide by responsible industry standards and designating November 29, 2002 as "Made in New York Day", to encourage patronage of companies committed to responsible production in New York City.

Whereas, New York City is the fashion capitol of the United States; and
Whereas, New York City's garment industry produces some of the highest quality fashion apparel anywhere; and
Whereas, Apparel manufacturing provides jobs for tens of thousands of New Yorkers, and is a critical point of economic access for immigrant New Yorkers; and
Whereas, The events of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath severely disrupted New York City's garment industry; and
Whereas, United States retailers and branded manufacturers that have recommitted to placing orders with New York City's garment factories have made an important commitment to the garment industry and New York's garment workers; and
Whereas, New York's fashion and retail environment attract consumers from around the world to shop for New York fashion, which provides important benefits to New York City's retailers, designers and branded manufacturers; and
Whereas, Apparel retailers receive direct benefits from New York City and New York State from the lifting of the sales tax on certain apparel purchases; and
Whereas, The Council of the City of New York applauds and endorses the "Made In New York" campaign to promote the production and purchase of New York apparel; and
Whereas, The Council praises the Garment Industry Development Corporation, UNITE, Nicole Miller, Elie Tahari, Bill Blass, Brooks Brothers and the Advisory Council of Proudly Made in New York for launching this initiative; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, that the Council calls on all of New York City's retailers to support clothing brand manufacturers and designers that commit to production in New York garment factories operating under responsible industry standards; and, be it further
Resolved, that the Council hereby designates November 29, 2002, as "Made In New York Day", to highlight companies that have committed to production in responsible New York factories and to encourage patronage of those businesses.
