Resolution designating the week of April 15 to April 21 to be known and celebrated as "Library Week" in New York City
 
 
By Council Members Gentile, Recchia Jr., Brewer, Dickens, Fidler, Koppell, Mealy, Nelson, Sanders Jr., Sears, Weprin and White Jr.
 
      Whereas, In 1895, the private libraries of three wealthy New Yorkers were merged to create New York City's first free public library; and
      Whereas, Since that time, New York City's three library systems have grown into some of the largest and most important circulating libraries in the world, with 208 local branches in all 5 boroughs, 4 central research libraries, and well over 65 million books and other circulating items; and
      Whereas, According to the 2007 Preliminary Mayor's Management Report, New York City's extensive branch library system hosts over 35 million visitors a year and offers invaluable educational resources and programs, including adult literacy and a wide array of children's programming; and
Whereas, Since 1958, communities throughout the United States have celebrated National Library week with special programming and events aimed at encouraging people to use public libraries and to thank the countless librarians, volunteers and other library staff who play such vital roles in the intellectual life of the country; and
Whereas, New York City's enormous library system, with its deep reach into the City's diverse communities, is especially deserving of praise and support; and
Whereas, Public libraries have served as the great storehouses of knowledge and learning throughout the centuries, providing access to literature and education to all people; and      
      Whereas, New York City's three public library systems are beloved community institutions that allow access to an astounding wealth and variety of literature and educational resources and are vital to the quality of life and intellectual vitality of the City; now, therefore, be it
      Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York designates the week of April 15 to April 21  to be known and celebrated as "Library Week" in New York City.
