Resolution recognizing and honoring Nancy Pelosi for her contributions to the advancement of women in politics and society at large, and on her election as the first woman in United States history to Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi was elected to the position of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives by her peers in Congress on January 4, 2007; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi is the first woman to ever serve in the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives and is the highest ranking woman to ever serve in public office in the United States; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi is a mother of five children and a grandmother to six grandchildren and has remained steadfastly committed to her family throughout her political career; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1986 and has since ably represented the San Francisco area in Congress; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi, has been a long time advocate of women’s issues and health care, advocating on behalf of these issues on a national stage; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi, previously served as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives and prior to that as House Democratic Whip; and

Whereas, Nancy Pelosi, as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives will surely continue her legacy of hardworking, motivated and dedicated leadership; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York recognizes and honors Nancy Pelosi for her contributions to the advancement of women in politics and society at large, and on her election as the first woman in United States history to Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
