By Council Member Boyland; also Council Members O'Donovan and Robinson.

A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to illuminated pathways and signs.

Section 1.  Section 27-2048 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended to read as follows:

§27-2048  Floor signs and exit pathways.  The owner of a multiple dwelling more than two stories in height shall post and maintain [a] an illuminated sign, of sufficient size to be readily seen, which states the number of the floor.  Such signs shall be located in the public hall near the stairs and elevator, and within any stair enclosure.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law, such owner shall also install and maintain a series of illuminated exit pathway markers on the floors of such multiple dwelling, on exit doors and in the stairwells.  Such exit doors shall contain illuminated signs bearing the word “EXIT” and such stairwells shall contain illuminated exit pathway markers on every handrail, stair and floor landing.  For the purposes of this section, such illuminated signs and exit pathway markers shall be made with non-electric lighting systems in a form and manner approved by the fire department.  The fire department shall adopt rules as to the spacing of exit pathway markers, the minimally acceptable size of illuminated signs and the degree of illumination required in such dwellings.

§2.  This local law shall take effect sixty days from the date of enactment.
