Int. No. 222

By Council Members Spigner and McCaffrey - read and referred to the Committee on Housing and Buildings.

A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to the installation of blocked flue cut-off switches in gas fueled central heating and hot water systems.

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

Section one.  Article nine of chapter two of the administrative code of the city of New York is hereby amended by adding a new section 27-2036.1 to read as follows:

§27-2036.1  Blocked flue cut-off switch. - a. All gas fueled hot water heaters with a hundred thousand BTU or greater input, and all gas fueled central heating plants shall be equipped with an effective blocked flue cut-off switch.  Such switch shall provide protection by automatically shutting off the burner in the event of a back draft caused by a blockage in the flue or outlet pipe.  Such switch shall be designed so as to prevent the restarting of the burner unless the cut-off device is first reset manually.

                     b.                     Any gas fueled water heater or central heating plant lawfully in existence of the effective date of this statute shall within six months of such date comply with the provisions of this section.

§2.                     This local law shall take effect ninety days after enactment.
