Notes: District 28 - Council Member - Democrat - Council Member Tyrell “Ty” Hankerson represents City Council District 28, better known as “The Great 28,” which encompasses the Queens neighborhoods of South Jamaica, South Richmond Hill, Rochdale Village, and South Ozone Park. Born in South Ozone Park and raised in every corner of the district, Ty’s goal is simple: a government that does what it is meant to do and serves and delivers for all people, no matter who you are or where you’re from. Council Member Hankerson’s work is reinforced by years of service to his community and a record of delivering for the residents of District 28. Before taking office, he served as the District Chief of Staff to New York City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams, following his earlier role in the office as Community Outreach Director. In these roles, he created neighborhood coalitions by building partnerships among civic associations, faith leaders, small business corridors, and youth organizations for the purpose of holding city agencies accountable and ensuring that District 28 receives its fair share of resources and services. Council Member Hankerson, inspired by the principles instilled in him by his faith, his mother, his grandmother, and his community at large, has always had a passion for community-based service. His commitment to service began with early involvement in the 106th Precinct Law Enforcement Explorers and continued through organizing the Code Black protest in Southeast Queens. The Code Black protest gained national attention during a period of civil unrest and mourning sparked by the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. It demonstrated Hankerson’s ability to shatter barriers and center his community in love, justice, and unity, regardless of race or occupation. Prior to his tenure in government, Council Member Hankerson began his career in the nonprofit sector with the historic Southern Queens Park Association. As the Founding Director of the Sports & Dance Camp and Special Assistant to the Executive Director, Hankerson supported vital community programming for young people in Southeast Queens. As a council member, Hankerson brings experience rooted in nonprofit youth programming, civic planning, public health community advising, and government operations. He remains focused on improving quality of life across District 28 by lowering costs, supporting youthdevelopment, expanding services for seniors, and restoring city services through improved response and resource allocation. He centers his work around delivering the results that strengthen District 28 and make New York City better for everyone. #SouthsideWeOutside
