District 24 - Council Member - Democrat - Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok, Electchester, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Jamaica Estates, Briarwood, Parkway Village, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica - Council Member Rory I. Lancman was born and raised in Queens. He proudly represents New York City’s 24th City Council District, where he has lived for more than forty years. Lancman is the Chair of the Council’s Committee on the Justice System, and he serves as a member of the following Committees: Finance, Land Use, Oversight and Investigation, Public Safety, Rules, Criminal Justice. Lancman is also a member of the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises. In the 2014-2017 session, Lancman chaired the Council’s Committee on Courts & Legal Services, where he advocated for a civil justice and criminal justice system that works for all New Yorkers. The committee held hearings on the city’s domestic violence courts, bail reform, legal services available to low-wage workers, the indigent defense system and other topics that address the fairness, transparency and efficiency of our legal process. Lancman previously served three terms in the New York State Assembly, where he sat on the Judiciary and Codes Committees, and chaired the Subcommittee on Workplace Safety. Lancman is a proud product of the New York City public school system, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College of the City University of New York. Lancman is a veteran of New York’s own 42nd Infantry Division.
