District 7 - Council Member - Democrat - Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville, Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights - New York City Councilmember Mark Levine represents the 7th District in Northern Manhattan. Serving as the Chair of Council Committee on Health and as a member of the Progressive Caucus, he is a leader on many issues including housing, education, economic justice, transportation, environmentalism, and more. Councilmember Levine has been a strong advocate for addressing inequality in New York City. As Parks Chair in the 2014-2017 session, he has successfully pushed for greater equity for parks in New York’s low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. He is also a leading voice on affordable housing issues, including the fight to get legal representation for all tenants in housing court. Mark began his career as a bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx. He also went on to found the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union. In the years before he entered the City Council, Mark served as Executive Director of Teach For America-New York, as Executive Director of the Center for After-School Excellence at TASC, and as chair of the Traffic and Transportation Committee on Manhattan Community Board 12. Mark is a long time Washington Heights resident with his wife and their two sons. He graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in physics and holds a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
