No. 196-B | Modifying the sodium warning at designated food service establishments. | Introduction | This bill would require the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to promulgate rules requiring food service establishments to display a triangular warning symbol with the words HIGH SODIUM displayed on the menu or menu board, or on a tag next to a food on display, adjacent to or directly below the triangular symbol for any menu item that contains 2,300 milligrams of sodium or more per serving. The bill would also require the promulgation of rules requiring food service establishments to display a very high sodium warning for menu items that contain 6,000 milligrams or more of sodium in total. This bill would also require factual warning statements about high sodium intake to be displayed at the point of purchase, on menus, and on menu boards. The bill creates a civil penalty scheme for violations, with the first violation receiving a warning, followed by $100 for a second violation and $200 for a third and subsequent violations. The bill requires DOHMH to conduct a public outreach campaign to inform food service establishments of the new menu labeling requirements. | | |

No. 547-A | Amending the icon for added sugar warning labels and the amount for civil penalties, and to repeal subdivision b of section 17-199.18 in relation thereto. | Introduction | This bill would require the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to designate icons and factual warning statements to be displayed by certain food service establishments on menus or menu boards adjacent to the menu items, and on or near food items on display, for any food item that meets or exceeds 100 percent of the daily value for added sugars determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or that meets or exceeds another amount of added sugars specified by DOHMH. The bill would also amend the existing civil penalty scheme for added sugar notifications by establishing a warning for the first violation, followed by $100 for a second violation and $200 for a third violation and subsequent violations. The bill would also require DOHMH to conduct a public education and outreach campaign to educate food service establishments about the new requirements. | | |
