Int 0166-2024 *Amanda Farías  Requiring building owners to provide shower hoses and informational materials on Legionnaires’ disease to tenants.IntroductionThis bill would require the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (“DOHMH”) to create and post online informational materials on Legionnaires’ disease and to notify owners of residential buildings when a tenant in the building has a confirmed case of Legionnaires’ disease. Int 0434-2024 *Pierina Ana Sanchez  Building water system maintenance and inspection.IntroductionThis bill would require a large building, a building with a water device, or a building which primarily houses people older than 65 or a building that has multiple housing units and a centralized hot water system, to develop and implement a building water system or water device management program and plan to minimize the growth and transmission of Legionella bacteria in the building’s water system. This bill also lists requirements for system maintenance, inspection and testing, cleaning and disinfection, sample monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting. The bill lays out an enforcement scheme, including DOHMH investigation and civil penalties. Schulman  Cooling tower inspections and testing.IntroductionThis bill would amend New York City’s cooling tower testing requirements by requiring building owners to test cooling towers for the presence of microbes at least as frequently as every month during periods of the year such cooling towers are in use. The bill further requires that all such testing be performed by or under the supervision of a qualified person. The bill would also require building owners to perform a biocide treatment of each cooling tower during warm weather when there is an increased risk of legionella growth, as determined by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
