Resolution calling upon the New York State Legislature to pass S. 3412/A. 6167, an act to amend the Administrative Code of the City of New York, in relation to allowing members of the police pension fund to obtain retirement credit for certain periods of New York City Police Department Cadet Corps service.

Whereas, The New York State Legislature is considering S. 3412/A. 6167, an act to amend the Administrative Code of the City of New York, in relation to allowing members of the police pension fund to obtain retirement credit for certain periods of New York Police Department (NYPD) Cadet Corps service; and
Whereas, S. 3412/A. 6167 would provide that any member who served in the NYPD Cadet Corps would be eligible for credit for the period of cadet corps service provided that the member files a claim for such service with the pension fund by December 31, 2008, or 90 days following the termination of Cadet Corps service; and
Whereas, In addition, S. 3412/A. 6167 would provide that in order to receive retirement credit for Cadet Corps service, members of the police pension fund would need to contribute such fund an amount which the member would have contributed during the period he or she served in the Cadet Corps program; and
Whereas, The NYPD Cadet Corps program is an apprenticeship program that provides qualified men and women with a chance to experience the challenges and personal rewards of a career in the NYPD while attending college; and
Whereas, The NYPD Cadet Corps represents a major initiative designed to ensure that future police officers are educated and representative of the racial and ethnic diversity of the City; and
Whereas, Police Cadets are offered benefits, varied work assignments, unlimited opportunities, and full-time work during the summer and part-time work during the school year; and
Whereas, Police Cadets work alongside police officers in New York City police precincts, NYPD Service Areas such as housing developments, and NYPD Transit Districts; and
Whereas, Police Cadets assist NYPD personnel and the community, teach crime prevention strategies, and work with senior citizens and police youth programs; and
Whereas, S. 3412/A. 6167 would encourage participation in this program by offering pension credit for those Police Cadets who have actually performed related duties; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon the New York State Legislature to pass S. 3412/A. 6167, an act to amend the Administrative Code of the City of New York, in relation to allowing members of the police pension fund to obtain retirement credit for certain periods of New York City Police Department Cadet Corps service.
