Resolution calling upon the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York to hold hearings on the timeliness of the Department of Sanitation’s program for replacement of litter baskets and the placement of additional litter baskets at commercial and residential locations with increased retail activity and heavy pedestrian traffic.

 

By Council Members Foster, Addabbo Jr., Gentile, James, Nelson, Palma, Weprin and White Jr.

 

Whereas, The Department of Sanitation has maps that pinpoint the locations of its own litter baskets, and private and business improvement district litter baskets; and

                     Whereas, for example, Bronx Community Planning Board No. 3 is supposed to have 165 litter baskets, Bronx Community Planning Board No. 4 is supposed to have 311 litter baskets, and Bronx Community Board No. 5 is supposed to have 257 litter baskets; and

                     Whereas, The Department of Sanitation’s monthly and annual scorecards show that there is significant and unacceptable litter on the streets and sidewalks in some community districts within the city; and

                     Whereas, Litter baskets are often vandalized or stolen; and

Whereas, The Department of Sanitation is required to replace damaged or missing litter baskets; and

Whereas, Litter baskets are placed primarily in commercial locations; and

Whereas, There is a need to add new litter baskets at both new commercial and residential locations where there is increased retail and heavy pedestrian traffic; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York hold hearings on the timeliness of the Department of Sanitation’s program for replacement of litter baskets and the placement of additional litter baskets at commercial and residential locations with increased retail and heavy pedestrian traffic.
