Res. No. 388 Title Resolution congratulating the New York/New Jersey "Liberty" Flotilla of the Northeast Region Sea Scouts of the Boy Scouts of America for their role as host of Scout Fleet 2002, an event that celebrates the 90th Anniversary of sea scouting in the United States. Body By Council Members Sanders, Felder and Nelson Whereas, Sea Scouting traces its origins to a campfire in England where Lord Robert Baden-Powel voiced his hopes that older Scouts would be interested in learning about boat management and seamanship, and stressed the need for the young men to prepare themselves for service on their country's ships; and Whereas, following the gathering at the campfire, Lord Baden-Powell's older brother, Warington, would go on to write a book entitled, Sea Scouting and Seamanship for Boys, which was enthusiastically received by the young men of Britain and soon found its way to the United States; and Whereas, In 1912, the Boys Scouts of America established a Sea Scouting branch in America, as a program for older boys interested in small boat management and seamanship; and Whereas, Over the years, the Sea Scouting branch has evolved to become a co-educational program offered to young adults between the ages of 14 and 21; and Whereas, Sea Scouting is organized to promote better citizenship and to improve members' boating skills and knowledge through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, and service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage; and Whereas, This year Sea Scouts will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of Sea Scouting in America; and Whereas, In honor of this 90th anniversary, on July 27, 2002 Sea Scouts from the Northeast Region will be celebrating Scout Fleet 2002 in the New York Harbor; and Whereas, Scout Fleet 2002 will involve approximately 500 Sea Scouts and leaders, who will be coming in their boats to the New York Harbor from states all along the Eastern Seaboard; and Whereas, Scout Fleet 2002 will include a parade of Sea Scout vessels between the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum and the Statue of liberty, and culminate with a anniversary ceremony, and a Sea Scout Exposition which will be open to the general public at the Museum's events barge; and Whereas, The New York/New Jersey "Liberty" Flotilla of the Northeast Region Sea Scouts will have the honor and distinction of acting as host/liaison of Scout Fleet 2002, since as the local Flotilla they are most familiar with the waters in the New York Harbor; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York congratulates the New York/New Jersey "Liberty" Flotilla of the Northeast Region Sea Scouts of the Boy Scouts of America for their role as host of Scout Fleet 2002, an event that celebrates the 90th Anniversary of sea scouting in the United States...Body Body LS# 737 RA Rev. 6/28/2002 H:/word/resolutions/sanders/ls#737 |1013| |1013|
