Res. No. 1922 Title Resolution condemning such stereotypical and racially insensitive remarks as those made recently made by David Letterman, host of the "The Late Show With David Letterman" on the CBS network, and further calling on all New Yorkers to repudiate such statements. Body By Council Members Linares, Espada, Henry, Lopez, Michels, Perkins, Reed, Sabini and Watkins; also Council Members Eisland, Marshall, Robles and Wooten Whereas, On May 11th, as part of the monologue with which he customarily opens his late-night talk show, David Letterman made a joke disparaging people of Colombian heritage; and Whereas, The target of the insulting remark was Miss Colombia Andrea Nocetti, a contestant in this year's Miss Universe Pageant, whose participation in the talent competition was described by Letterman as having "swallowed 50 bags of heroin;" and Whereas, Ms. Nocetti was terribly insulted by the remark, and the stereotypical image of Colombians that it perpetuates, a criticism echoed by Colombian Consul General Mauricio Suarez, who wrote a letter to CBS saying that the remark "hurt the feelings of our entire community; and Whereas, As members of a multiethnic, multiracial city, we must ensure that the dignity of all the peoples that make up New York is protected; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York condemns such stereotypical and racially insensitive remarks as those made recently made by David Letterman, host of the "The Late Show With David Letterman" on the CBS network, and further calls on all New Yorkers to repudiate such statements.
