Res. No. 1279 Title Resolution calling upon the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York to conduct an oversight hearing regarding the training of New York City police officers. Body By Council Members Warden, Boyland, Carrion, Malave-Dilan, Espada, Freed, Marshall, Perkins, Quinn and Reed; also Council Members Eisland, Fisher, Michels and Pinkett Whereas, The New York City Police Department (NYPD) performs a vital service in our City's communities, and it is important that police officers are adequately and properly trained to handle their awesome responsibilities; and Whereas, Part of the training for police officers must include extensive and regular instruction in the use of firearms and instruction regarding the many situations under which a police officer may need to use his weapon; and Whereas, In light of the diversity of this City's population, sensitivity and cultural diversity training must be an integral part of Academy and post-Academy instruction; and Whereas, The shooting of Amadou Diallo by four officers of the NYPD's Street Crime Unit raised serious questions about the quality of training of NYPD officers, prompting many New Yorkers to call for reform of the NYPD's training; and Whereas, The testimony in the Diallo trial has led to renewed calls for better training of NYPD officers; and Whereas, The New York City Council recognizes the need for such NYPD training reform, and held hearings in 1999 regarding the Street Crime Unit and police brutality, and recently created a Select Committee on Police Performance and Community Relations; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York conduct an oversight hearing regarding the training of New York City police officers.
