Resolution supporting the principles and goals of the Abidjan Declaration and the HIV/AIDS Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders in Africa.

Whereas, The United Nations Development Program, in collaboration with UNAIDS and other partners, sponsored the 10th International Conference on HIV/AIDS, held in Abidjan, in December 1997; and
Whereas, The Conference addressed the AIDS epidemic in Africa, where an estimated 22.5 million men, women and children are living with HIV/AIDS, and where millions of children have been orphaned by the disease; and
Whereas, Furthermore, the HIV/AIDS epidemic jeopardizes Africa's social and economic development, destroying human resources and contributing to poverty, migration and civil unrest in the region; and
Whereas, At the Conference, the HIV/AIDS Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders in Africa issued the Abidjan Declaration, a political statement of concern regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa; and
Whereas, Furthermore, the Declaration expressed the commitment of the Alliance to work together to search for solutions relevant to local needs and realities, in order to effectively respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in their communities; and
Whereas, The Alliance is continuing to raise awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS on African societies, and has been an important vehicle for mobilizing partnerships at the local, national and international level, in its fight against the spread of the disease; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York supports the principles and goals of the Abidjan Declaration and the HIV/AIDS Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders in Africa.
