Resolution calling upon the United States government to accelerate and increase its aid and support for the international relief effort underway in the flood ravaged country of Mozambique

By Council Members Robinson, Clarke, Lopez, Marshall and Abel; also Council Members McCaffrey, Michels, O'Donovan, Quinn, Rivera, Watkins and Wooten
Whereas, The country of Mozambique, which is situated on the southeastern coast of
Africa, has suffered its worst floods in forty years; and
Whereas, These floods have left 400 people dead and one million people either homeless or in desperate need of help; and
Whereas, The death toll is estimated to rise into the thousands; and
Whereas, An international relief effort has been underway to provide assistance to the flood ravaged country; and
Whereas, As a world power, the United States is in a position to offer aid and support to the people of Mozambique; and
Whereas, In particular, the air support that the United States is capable of providing can save thousands of lives; and
Whereas, The tremendous devastation wrought by the flooding and the United States' ability to provide greatly needed assistance dictates that the United States act with haste and dedication towards the international relief effort in Mozambique; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon the United States government to accelerate and increase its aid and support for the international relief effort underway in the flood ravaged country of Mozambique.
