Body By Council Members Boyland, Baez, Barron, Comrie, Felder, Foster, Gerson, Jackson, Koppell, Lopez, Monserrate, Nelson, Reed, Seabrook, Weprin, and Oddo Whereas, Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan on September 26, 1981 and is the youngest of five sisters; and Whereas, Serena started playing tennis at a young age on public tennis courts under the tutelage of her father, Richard; and Whereas, Despite various obstacles and disadvantages, Serena excelled at the sport of tennis; and Whereas, Serena has proven to be a role model for thousands of young girls who grow up in inner cities by showing that they, too, can achieve their dreams with hard work and perseverance, regardless of race, gender or economic disadvantages; and Whereas, Serena captured the 2002 Wimbledon title by defeating her sister, Venus; and Whereas, Serena is now ranked the number one women's tennis player in the world; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York honors Serena Williams for her Wimbledon win and her role in advancing women's sports.
