Resolution calling upon Con Edison to remove all forms of footwear and other encumbrances from all phone and power lines in the city of New York to improve the safety and well-being of the residents of the city of New York.

Whereas, Con Edison maintains over 36,000 miles of overhead electrical wires in the New York area; and
Whereas, A large portion of these wires have shoes or other items dangling from them that were put there by residents of the city of New York in a practice known as “shoefiti;” and
Whereas, Such placement of shoes and other material have been known to expose power and phone lines and have led to problems such as sparking, fires, and breaks in utility service; and
Whereas, Con Edison has an obligation to maintain the overhead lines free of potentially damaging obstructions; and
Whereas, Shoefiti has also been known to signify the presence of drugs and gangs in other North American cities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York calls upon Con Edison to remove all forms of footwear and other encumbrances from its overhead phone and power lines in the city of New York in order to improve the safety and well-being of the residents of the city of New York.
