Resolution commending Pfizer, Inc. for partnering with the South African Ministry of Health to help combat HIV/AIDS through a drug distribution program.

By Council Members Clarke, Robles, Freed, Henry, Lopez and Perkins; also Council Members Espada, Fisher, Koslowitz, Leffler, Marshall, Nelson, Povman, Wooten and Abel
Whereas, According to the report entitled AIDS in South Africa (the "AIDS report"), issued by the AIDS Foundation of South Africa , it is estimated that 3.6 million South Africans were HIV positive in 1998; and
Whereas, The AIDS report found that "one in eight adult South Africans is HIV positive"; and
Whereas, Pfizer has had operations in South Africa for over 40 years; and
Whereas, According to the AIDS report, Pfizer's anti-HIV efforts in South Africa are more than a decade old; and
Whereas, According to the AIDS report, Cryptococcal Meningitis ("CM") is a life-threatening infection of the brain which occurs in approximately 10 percent of AIDS patients; and
Whereas, Diflucan, a drug manufactured by Pfizer, has demonstrated its effectiveness in the treatment of CM; and
Whereas, The AIDS report states that Pfizer and the South African Ministry of Health are working cooperatively to provide Diflucan to AIDS patients throughout South Africa; and
Whereas, Pfizer has promised to provide Diflucan to South African patients, free of charge, for as long as they are undergoing treatment for CM; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York commends Pfizer, Inc. for partnering with the South African Ministry of Health to Combat AIDS/HIV through a drug distribution program.
