Resolution calling upon the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York to conduct an oversight hearing and a cost assessment study in relation to the recent decision by the Museum of the City of New York to relocate to the Tweed Courthouse.

Whereas, The trustees of the Museum of the City of New York recently announced that they had unanimously decided to move from their residence of seventy years at 105 Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street to the Tweed Courthouse next to City Hall; and
Whereas, The controversial decision to relocate has angered many members of the East Harlem community where the Museum is located; and
Whereas, Community groups have criticized the Board of Trustees for its failure to discuss their decision in advance with local elected officials and community groups; and
Whereas, The presence of the Museum of the City of New York serves as a vital and integral part of East Harlem and its removal would create a large void in the community; and
Whereas, If relocated, serious questions have been raised regarding the future use of the Fifth Avenue location, in particular, involving air rights; and
Whereas, The Council should conduct a cost assessment study in order to determine whether the decision to relocate the Museum is in the best interests of the City and to what extent the impact would be on the East Harlem community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the appropriate committee of the Council of the City of New York conduct an oversight hearing and a cost assessment study in relation to the recent decision of the Museum of the City of New York to relocate to the Tweed Courthouse.
