A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to lowering the speed limit for bicycles with electric assist

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

 

Section 1. Subchapter 3 of chapter 1 of title 19 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 19-177.1 to read as follows:

§ 19-177.1 Speed limit for bicycles with electric assist. a. Definitions. For the purposes of this section, the term “bicycle with electric assist” has the same definition as contained in section 102-c of the vehicle and traffic law or successor provision.

b. No person shall operate a bicycle with electric assist in excess of 15 miles per hour.

c. Any person who violates subdivision b of this section is liable for a civil penalty not to exceed $50.

§ 2. This local law takes effect 180 days after it becomes law.LH
