Res. No. 1568 Title Resolution recognizing the month of October 2000 as "Breast Health Awareness Month" in the City of New York. Body By the Speaker (Council Member Vallone), and Council Members Robles, Eldridge, Watkins, Boyland, Clarke, Dear, Malave-Dilan, Henry, Koslowitz, Lasher, Linares, Marshall, McCaffrey, Michels, Miller, Moskowitz, Nelson, O'Donovan, Rivera, Abel and Fiala; also Council Members DiBrienza, Espada, Fisher, Foster, Leffler, Rodriguez and Robinson Whereas, According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, excluding skin cancers; and Whereas, All women are at risk of developing breast cancer but the risk increases with such factors as age, family history of breast cancer, diet and personal childbearing history; and Whereas, The American Cancer Society estimates that during this year approximately 182,800 new invasive cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States; and Whereas, Breast cancer incidence rates for women have increased about 4% per year during the 1980's but during the past few years, incidence has leveled off; and Whereas, Most of the recent rise in rates is believed to be due to marked increases in mammography utilization, allowing detection of early stage breast cancer, often before such cancer would become clinically apparent; and Whereas, The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1.9 million women in the United States are alive with a history of breast cancer; and Whereas, According to the American Cancer Society, during this year there will be about 40,800 deaths from breast cancer among women and 400 among men; and Whereas, The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 20 to 39 have a clinical health examine every three years and perform a monthly self-examination; and that all women should have a screening mammogram at age 40 and yearly mammograms thereafter; and Whereas, This year, during the month of October, the New York City Division of the American Cancer Society is sponsoring a peer educator program, entitled "Tell a Friend"; and Whereas, The purpose of this program is to train community volunteers to educate their friends and family members about breast cancer and the importance of early detection; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York recognizes the month of October, 2000 as "Breast Health Awareness Month" in the City of New York.
