Notes: District 22 - Council Member - Democrat - Astoria, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Woodside - Costa Constantinides represents the New York City Council’s 22nd District, which includes his native Astoria along with parts of Jackson Heights, Woodside, and East Elmhurst. He serves as chair of the Council’s Environmental Protection Committee and sits on four additional committees: Parks, Transportation, For-Hire Vehicles, and Land Use, as well as the subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises. Costa was elected to the City Council in 2013 with over 65% of the vote, becoming the first Greek-Cypriot-American elected to office in New York City. He was re-elected for a second term in 2017 with over 93% of the vote. During his time in the Council, Costa helped pass a landmark zoning agreement on a future development in Astoria. For the first time in city history, a developer was be required by law to provide permanently affordable housing. Environmental policy has been a priority for Costa. The Council unanimously passed his bill to reduce carbon emissions 80% by 2050, now Local Law 66 of 2014. To help achieve this, Costa has sponsored additional legislation to encourage more use of solar, wind, geothermal, and biofuels. Costa has engaged his neighborhood in community service, coordinating school supply, coat, and holiday gift drives. He has also organized playground, block, and graffiti cleanups. After attending P.S. 84 and P.S. 122 in Astoria, Costa graduated Cum Laude from CUNY Queens College and Benjamin Cardozo School of Law. Costa resides in Astoria with his wife and son.
