District 12 - Council Member - Democrat - Wakefield, Olinville, Edenwald, Eastchester, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Co-op City - New York City Council Member Andy King was first elected to serve the people of the 12th Council District in November 2012, when the voters issued out a landslide of 80 percent of the vote to King as their new City Council Member. He was re-elected by the majority to his first four-year term in November 2013. A lifelong resident of the 12th District and a graduate of our City’s public school system, NYC Council Member Andy King received a BA in communications from William Paterson University. King returned to the 12th District and worked as a NYC Child Protective Caseworker before changing careers and becoming the Bronx Lead Organizer for 1199SEIU/GNYHA Healthcare Education Project. He worked tirelessly as a community advocate while contributing to his father’s youth basketball team: “Kings 5.” Ultimately, his passion for youth led King and his wife, Neva Shillingford-King, to create the Bronx Youth Empowerment Program. As a lawmaker, King’s first contribution to the Charter came his first year in office with the signing of his bill requiring the Department of Education to develop materials containing information regarding college savings plans. More recently, the Council passed King’s legislation calling on the Federal government to add language that directly negates the Three-Fifth Clause by stating that African-Americans are 100 percent whole individuals and declare March 5th as “Three Fifth Clause Awareness Day” in New York City. Since elected to office, King has allocated more than $1.1 million in discretionary funding and $8 million in capital in the District.
