Res. No. 1253

Resolution congratulating the New York Giants on their victory in Super Bowl XLII.

By Council Members Felder, Brewer, Gentile, James, Liu, Mealy, Mendez, Recchia Jr., Sanders Jr., Seabrook and Weprin

Whereas, The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), played between the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC); and

Whereas, The New York Giants (“Giants”), established in 1925, are a professional football team in the NFC representing the New York Metropolitan Area; and

Whereas, The Giants have won several pro-football championships in the past, including Super Bowl XXI in 1987 and Super Bowl XXV in 1991; and

Whereas, On February 3, 2008, Super Bowl XLII was played in Glendale, Arizona, between the Giants and the New England Patriots (“Patriots”); and

Whereas, The Giants were considered to be the underdogs, entering Super Bowl XLII with a regular season of 10 wins and 6 losses; and

Whereas, The Patriots were considered the heavy favorite, entering Super Bowl XLII with a season record of 18 wins and 0 losses; and

Whereas, The Giants won the coin toss and scored the first 3 points of the game, holding, according to press reports, possession of the ball for more than half of the game; and

Whereas, The score was 7 to 3 in the Patriots’ favor throughout the second and third quarters, until Giants Quarterback Eli Manning led a six-play, 80-yard drive, ending with a 5-yard touchdown throw to Wide Receiver David Tyree with 11:05 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter; and

Whereas, Many have indicated that the greatest catch in Super Bowl history occurred when Eli Manning in Super Bowl XLII escaped being sacked by the Patriots and fired a pass to David Tyree, who successfully wrestled for the ball, allowing the Giants to keep possession of it; and

Whereas, This incredible play enabled the Giants to gain a first down for their attempt to score the winning touchdown; and

Whereas, Eli Manning passed the ball to Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress, who made the winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in the game; and

Whereas, Super Bowl XLII has been considered by many NFL experts to be the greatest Super Bowl ever played; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York congratulates the New York Giants on their victory in Super Bowl XLII.
