Res. No. 177 Title Resolution calling upon the Federal, State and City governments to provide economic assistance to the merchants on Clinton Street between Delancey and Houston Streets in Manhattan and calling upon the appropriate committee of the Council to conduct a hearing on the economic impact of the Williamsburgh Bridge construction on the surrounding area. Body By Council Member Lopez Whereas, Clinton Street is a major thoroughfare for commerce and transportation within lower Manhattan; and Whereas, Since 1995, when repair work began on the Williamsburgh Bridge, the direction of traffic along Clinton Street has been reversed and has caused a loss of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the block; and Whereas, The construction on Williamsburgh Bridge, which was supposed to be a temporary situation, has lasted for five years; and Whereas, The blocks of Clinton Street between Delancey and Houston Streets have been negatively impacted by the construction taking place on the Williamsburgh Bridge, including the closing of several businesses; and Whereas, The Council of the City of New York is concerned that the ongoing construction is causing economic distress for the merchants and businesses on Clinton Street, now, therefore, be it Resolved, That Council of the City of New York calls upon the Federal, State and City governments to provide economic assistance to the merchants on Clinton Street between Delancey and Houston Streets in Manhattan and calls upon the appropriate committee of the Council to conduct a hearing on the economic impact of the Williamsburgh Bridge construction on the surrounding area. |1013| |1013| LS # 2666 TMT Created on 04/18/02 4:42 PM
