Body By Council Members Boyland, Fisher, Berman, Clarke, Eisland, Freed, Marshall, Miller, Rodriguez and Warden; also Council Members DiBrienza, Koslowitz, Leffler, Linares, Nelson, Povman and Wooten Whereas, The Million Mom March, an unprecedented display of advocacy and action in favor of responsible gun control measures, drew 200,000 women from 44 states this past Mother's Day to The Mall in Washington, D.C.; and Whereas, The Million Mom March provided a much-needed forum for concerned mothers, prominent leaders, policymakers and other individuals to address the issue of gun violence and how we as a nation can take real steps to cut down the number of guns that pervade our communities every day; and Whereas, Some of the measures advocated by march organizers include mandatory background checks, licensing of handgun owners, registration of handguns, safety training, cooling-off periods, child-proofing, limits on sales to one gun a month per customer and stricter enforcement of existing laws; and Whereas, One of the most significant outcomes of this well-planned and highly effective event was the international attention brought on by this outpouring of support by participants from all over the country; and Whereas, The organizers of the Million Mom March are to be praised and commended for their concern for the children of America and for their unwavering commitment to bringing about sensible gun control laws and needed reforms; now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York congratulates the organizers of the Million Mom March for drawing attention to the pressing need for responsible gun control laws.
